Thank you for your comment and query.

It is important that if we choose to go the FES route, your patient will need to have good passive range of movement, to allow the stimulation to take the joints through the correct movement. If the range is limited due to spasticity and/or weakness only, then Electrical Stimulation could be of assistance.

We would typically use the MicroStim Therapeutic Electrical Stimulation (TES) device, rather than the FES device for the upper limb. There is also evidence of benefits in pain reduction in the shoulder following the use of TES in the stroke patient. The current cost of the MicroStim is R5720.00.

Good morning. I have a pt that had a stroke when she was 13years old. She is now 50 years and we were talking about FES. Her problem is more with her right upper limb and due to spasticity, she has very little function and constant neck pain. Will the FES make a difference to her pain as well? What is the cost of a FES currently? Thank you. Esther

Dear Faridapat. The chances of this working in her case is not great, as it sounds like there may have been damage to the nerve itself, making it what we call a Lower Motor Nerve injury. You may want to investigate "Long-pulse" therapy, but I think this may not be appropriate for a young child. Feel free to call me to discuss if you wish.

my daughter of 21 months has footdrop after she had an injection on the butt. apparently the peroneal nerve has been damaged, am looking for any stimulation machine that can help to stimulate the nerve since she is still a child, the stimulation can help to rebuild her muscles as she grows. i dont have much ideas on this, but was told this can help. how can i get this machine since am not in south africa? my email is faridapat@yahoo.com.

I am a C4/5 Incomplete Quad. My medical Aid stopped paying for my chronic medication at the end of August stating that quadriplegia is not a PMB. Deon advised me that Cervical Vertebrae Dislocation is a PMB condition and that PMB Legislation and benefits are determined by The Department of Health and not Medical Aids. I quoted Deon on a few issues and conquered the Medical Aid Beast. Thank you Deon, they are now paying for my medication. I could not have done this without your help.

At last! A medical professional who likes business. I will be using Proffessa to streamline the way my practice runs so that I only have to worry about being the best physio and not worry about the business side. I think the service that Deon offers is brilliant and he really takes everything into account in his approach. I already learnt a lot at the course he offered in PE in October 2011 and can't wait to have a "Proffessa-managed" practice.

I was privileged to attend your "Roadshow" on 01∙10∙2011 in Port Elizabeth.
I found the content of the day very applicable and informative to me as a private practice owner. Attending the day was most rewarding to me.
I would most definitely recommend any physiotherapist owning a private practice, if at all possible try and attend such a course presented by Deon Buhrs when it might be presented in your close proximity.

Hi Allan.

Nurses do not fall under the Health Professions Council of South Africa, but rather their own Council, being the SA Nursing Council. As I am mostly involved in the HPCSA environment, I can not give you a decisive answer. I tried to get some info from the SANC, but perhaps you can call them directly. Their numbers are:
012 420 1000 for general enquiries
012 420 1059 / 1062 for the Acting Registrars office.

Thank you for your article on selling a part of your business. I have a colleague who is looking at buying a "baby clinic" from a sole trader, but would like to form a company. Do registered nurses fall under Health Professions Council of South Africa regulations? If not, can she form a (Pty) Ltd company?

The FES stimulator improved my life dramatically! Deon has been fantastic.I can and certainly recommend the stimulator.
